Blackpool Tournaments Report. 18th June 2022 played at Park View Rd , Lytham
An excellent day well organised by Neil Mitchell and Andy Charlesworth at Blackpool tournaments. 32 teams entered the 50s and 60s competitions from all over the UK to make this a very well attended event.
Thanks to all the referees who had the difficult job of controlling 250 or so highly competitive senior players. Remember “If you are old enough. you are good enough” to quote Mike Bassett.
The 50s squad started well with a 4-0 victory over Oundle Town and followed up with a close draw against Boca Seniors 0-0. A feisty match with Dumbarton was settled by a penalty to win 1-0 but then a defeat to a strong W’nesborough side by 2 goals to 1 saw the Senior Seasiders qualify for the semi-finals of the top prize in second place.
An excellent West Hartlepool team came out the winners 2-1 in this game and went on to win the overall competition with a penalty shoot out in the Final.
The 60’s squad also started strongly despite conceding a rocket shot 15 seconds into the first game. However this was pegged back and a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury ensued. This was followed up with comfortable wins against Atherstone 2-0 and Bolton 1-0 before a great game ended 1-1 with table topping Townshend (Ayreshire). A final 3-0 victory against Linthingow confirmed Pool’s second slot in the league format and a semi-final vs Blackfyne (Durham). Unfortunately this lead to a 1-0 defeat in a very cagey encounter.
Congratulations to Garstang though, who finished fourth in the League, but went on to win the play-off games against Townshend and then Blackfyne to lift the Trophy on the day.
