ST NICOLAS CofE PRIMARY RETAIN JIMMY ARMFIELD MEMORIAL TROPHY!
On Monday 10TH July, Blackpool FC Community Trust held their annual Jimmy Armfield Memorial Trophy Tournament at Stanley Park.
The tournament is about using the power of football to bring people together and celebrate the career and life of one of Blackpool’s biggest icons and football legends, Sir Jimmy Armfield. Schools were invited to bring Year 3 and 4 pupils to compete in the tournament with the same qualities Jimmy applied within his own career, which was to have fun, learn how to win and lose well, and do the best you can do.
The event held by Blackpool FC Community Trust was attended by approx.120 pupils from 14 primary schools who played out an amazing morning of football, competing in over 35 small-sided matches. There were some brilliant individual and team performances on the day, and the top teams of the groups went through to the quarter finals, which were strongly competed.
The semi finals were contested by St Nicolas CofE v Armfield Academy, and Westcliff Academy v Norbreck Primary, with St Nicolas and Westcliff going through to the final.
The final was contested in great spirit by both teams, and after Westcliff taking a 2-0 lead, St Nicolas pulled it back to make it 2-2, taking us through to a nail-biting penalty shoot-out, with an ecstatic St Nicolas team winning 3-2 on penalties to retain the trophy they won last year.
All pupils from both schools played with a fantastic attitude and applied themselves well in the true spirit of the game, and again it was a pleasure to host the event in memory of Jimmy Armfield.
Primary PE Manager Simon Smith from the Community Trust said:
“It was an absolute pleasure to hold this tournament again and the standard on display was even stronger than last year. We changed the format to have ¼ finals this year to allow more teams to progress to knockouts which worked well.
The final was a brilliant spectacle and well done to St Nicolas for retaining the trophy, not an easy thing to achieve!”
