A Fantastic Start to Autism Awareness Week

We had a fantastic start to Autism Awareness Week on Monday 1st April, with Park Community Academy and Woodlands school coming together to play a friendly match.  With the majority of their students having ASD and other profound and complex learning difficulties this was Woodlands first football fixture .  It was also one of the first opportunities for Park pupils to represent their school in a competitive football fixture.

Mr Johnston, from Park Academy credited the event saying, “Fantastic event!  It was excellent to see pupils from both schools playing sport in a supporting environment.  As Blackpool FC Community Trust staff have been working with them weekly, it made the children feel comfortable to play and they were able to express themselves.  It was great that the teachers were also involved and it was a community team effort.”

Mr Davison from Woodlands School said, “The participants have been working towards this day for the past term, with Blackpool FC Community Trust staff creating and delivering the first sports specific lunch time club.  Due to the success of this club, Woodlands school has now created other sports clubs which further enhances the student’s opportunity for physical activity.”

Blackpool FC Community Trust also hold Pan Abilty football sessions on Thursday evenings:

4:30pm – 5:30pm for 7 – 16 year olds (£3 per sessions) and 7pm – 8pm for 16 year olds and over (£1 per session).  These sessions take place at PlayFootball, Garstang Road West, Blackpool, FY3 7JH.
