Community Trust team up with VisitBlackpool for Armed Forces Week 2018

Did you know that the RAF trained at Bloomfield Road during World War II? Do you know about the Football League War Cup?

For Armed Forces Week, 2018, Blackpool FC Community Trust will be offering free stadium tours that will look to explore the links that exist between the football club and the Armed Forces, as well as the general heritage of the club and stadium. These tours will conclude with a group discussion where people can share their own sporting memories. These tours will take place at 1pm on Tuesday 26th and Thursday 28th June, meeting at the Club Shop.

These events are part of a broader piece of work that is carried out by Blackpool FC Community Trust thanks to funding from The Royal British Legion. Every Thursday from 1-2.30pm there is a Sporting Memories group that meets to discuss sport, primarily football. There is also a monthly Veterans Club that takes place on the last Tuesday from 1.30-3pm where veterans, serving individuals and their families can meet up and share a brew and make new connections. Both of these take place at the stadium.

Ashley Hackett, Chief Executive at Blackpool FC Community Trust explains that “The town and the football club both have a rich connection with the Armed Forces. We are delighted to be part of this event in 2018 and look forward to welcoming people to the stadium to take part in these tours.”

Armed Forces Week is Blackpool’s opportunity to say thank you to our heroes. The annual event has beencelebrated in Blackpool since 2006, and is now an integral fixture in the resort’s events calendar.

From 25 June – 1 July, the resort unites in welcoming serving military personnel, veterans and cadets, with a wide range of activities designed for them and their families, as well as the many thousands of people visiting the resort.

Blackpool Councillor Chris Ryan and Armed Forces Champion said: “We are delighted that the Blackpool FCCommunity Trust are working with us on Armed Forces Week this year.

“The stadium tours are going to be a fantastic addition to Armed Forces Week programme and a great opportunity to highlight our sporting history.”
